The Lone Walker of Austin
— When night settles over Austin, it doesn’t fall — it drifts. Down from the Hill Country, through the live‑oak branches, across the empty stretches of Congress Avenue. And when that slow Texas darkness reaches the Capitol dome, the city remembers the one presence it never outran.
They call him the Lone Walker. No fog here — just heat, dust, and a shimmer in the air like the horizon bending. Some nights he’s a silhouette moving steady down the street, long coat brushing the pavement, hat tipped low enough to hide the eyes.
Other nights he’s only footsteps behind you, keeping pace even when you try to pull away. He’s older than Austin. Older than the cattle trails. Older than the stories that try to explain him.
He doesn’t speak. He doesn’t chase. He just walks — always toward the heart of the city.
And when the Lone Walker arrives, the veil thins. Landmarks shift. Shadows stretch. Austin’s ghosts step forward. This is where the index begins.
